KoldfrontMarch 31, 2017

The Koldfront TWR181ES 18 Bottle Dual Zone Thermoelectric Wine Cooler keeps up to 12 bottles of red (based on an assumed bottle size of 750 mL) and 6 bottles of white wine at the ideal storage temperatures. This dual zone thermoelectric wine cooler has upper and lower storage areas with temperatures that can be controlled individually.

Red wines taste best when stored near room temperature, slightly chilled, while white wines need cooler temperatures for optimum flavor. The ideal storage solution for a wine collection that includes both is one unit that has two separate, independent temperature zones. This way, oenophiles have the best of both worlds without sacrificing too much space in a kitchen, dining room, bar area, or other favorite entertainment spot.

Koldfront TWR181ES 18 Bottle Dual Zone Thermoelectric Wine Cooler Review

Aesthetically pleasing features of this wine cooler include the silver and black exterior finish and the chrome-plated metal racks. The wine cooler is quite slim and overall looks very sleek and modern. It will easily fit in with a wide range of decor styles.

Forced-air circulation of the interior fan helps keep the temperature consistent, adding to the unit’s efficiency. Although this wine cooler does not have an ENERGY STAR rating, this is not usual for wine coolers and other compact specialty refrigerators.

To help make sure the user is getting the best possible efficiency from a wine cooler, the user should make sure the unit is stored at a room temperature that is not typically too far above or below 70 degrees F. Another tip for increasing efficiency is to leave the door closed as often as possible; this may also help reduce the need to manually defrost the unit. In addition, choosing the correct size of refrigeration unit for one’s specific needs when purchasing a wine refrigerator can help keep energy costs and energy usage under control.

The thermoelectric technology that powers this wine cooler and the solid state components are designed to be vibration-free. Some operating noises are to be expected, including humming from the interior and exterior fans while they are operating. The unit is generally very quiet.

If the unit seems to be making an unusual amount of noise, the user should check that the wine cooler is not touching a wall or other object, and that it is sitting on the floor in a level position. A carpenter’s level may be needed to ensure that the unit is installed in a level position.

The lower zone has a temperature range of 54-64 degrees F and can store up to 12 bottles of red wine. The upper zone has a 45-54 degrees F temperature range and can hold up to six bottles of white wine. An interior fan helps circulate the air inside the wine cooler to help keep the temperature in each zone consistent.

The four sliding chrome racks can each be removed. These racks are scalloped so that wine bottles fit securely in the racks, without rolling around on a shelf.

This unit's door handle is located on the right side. Unfortunately, there is no way to reverse the door for a user who prefers a left-swing door.

The doors have a double pane, tempered, tinted window, which helps protect the wine inside the bottles from harmful ultraviolet light. The cabinet is black, and the door has silver trim. A recessed black plastic handle built into the door helps preserve the streamlined look of the door.

The bottom of the unit has four built-in leveling legs so the user can adjust the height of the dual zone thermoelectric wine cooler as necessary.

The exterior dimensions are 26.25" H x 13.64" W x 19.38" D; interior dimensions are 21.5" H x 10.5" W x 12" D. Its shipping weight is 49 lbs., and the out-of-carton weight is 39 lbs.

Input voltage is 116V/60 Hz. Wattage is 130W. The unit requires a three-amp circuit breaker. The manufacturer included a 1-year warranty on part and a 90-day warranty on labor.

To defrost this wine cooler, the user must unplug the unit, open the door, and allow the moisture to collect in the built-in water pan located at the bottom of the unit. Then the user must dry the wine cooler with a clean towel. The water pan cannot be removed.

At a relatively low price compared to other dual zone wine coolers, this Koldfront model has several inviting features for this price point. This wine cooler is a compact, convenient size that doesn’t take up a lot of room, but also doesn’t have the capacity to store a large wine collection. It’s a good size for keeping the user’s favorite wines on hand for entertaining, or for a beginning wine collector.

The Koldfront TWR181ES 18-Bottle Dual Zone Thermoelectric Wine Cooler can currently be purchased from Amazon. A wide variety of other online retailers also offer this wine cooler in the approximate price range.
